Q&A with Designer and Founder of Library, Lauren Lail

Q&A with Designer and Founder of Library, Lauren Lail

I am a passionate wife, mom, business owner, living and loving in Charleston. I am working on the perpetual balance and pull that I feel among all of these things. I love each and every aspect of all of them – even on the hardest days. I am so happy to share my Library Littles with the world. A fun new expansion of our brand that is available for girls 2-8. Sweet, soft garments that are sure to be something both moms and children can agree on wearing!

WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT BEING A MOM?

Truly everything! Being a mom is the role I feel most confident in. Seeing the world through my children's eyes is so special to me.

HOW HAS MOTHERHOOD CHANGED YOU? MOTHER

Motherhood has completed me.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR MINI SQUAD.

Everett just turned 7. She is curious, considerate and so snuggly. She loves to sing and play school. Hugh is 4 1/2 and is so gregarious and loving.
He loves to play basketball and play more basketball. Their personalities very much complement one another and they are such sweet playmates.

DID YOU BREASTFEED? IF SO, HOW DID IT AFFECT YOUR WARDROBE CHOICES?

Yes, I did breastfeed both of my children for six/eight months. It was such a wonderful bond I felt with both of them.
I wore a lot of garments that buttoned to make nursing while out and about easier.

HAS YOUR PERSONAL STYLE CHANGES SINCE BECOMING A MOM? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR #MOMSTYLE?

I would be happy to wear jeans and a white t-shirt every day or some version of that combo. I have a casual style, so I think that coincides with being a mom. I look for chic, but practical everyday items to add to my wardrobe, which is why I love so many BURU pieces.

WHAT ARE YOUR MUST-HAVES FROM BURU? HOW DO THEY WORK FOR THE MOMMY LIFESTYLE?

The Ruby Ruffle Wrap Dress is so fun and I love that it can be worn year round. I chose the vanilla bean jeans, because I love the comfort and ease they exude.

Some other favorites from the BWL collection are...

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPANY. WHAT'S IT'S STORY OR HISTORY

Library has evolved over the years. The business began with curating a vintage collection from around the globe to which many of the items were altered for a more modern fit and finish. I expanded to my own womenswear collection with the knowledge I had gained on how wonderfully vintage clothing was cut and sewn in 2013. This year, I launched Library Littles, sincere and smart garments for girls that love to play, dream and delight in adventures big and small.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?

Every day is different for me, but each one starts with big smiles from my babes. With owning my business, it allows me to make time visit school for lunch with my children or volunteer in the classroom, if needed. I love having this flexibility.

WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT YOUR HOME BASE, WHERE YOU LIVE & WHAT YOU LOVE ABOUT IT. PLEASE SHARE YOUR FAVORITE FAMILY FRIENDLY SPOTS + ACTIVITIES.

David and I moved to Charleston from Kentucky twelve years ago, we have since met the most amazing friends that have become like family to us. We live downtown with Hampton Park in our backyard. It's a beautiful park that we run, bike and play in every week with our children. We frequent Taco Boy, Harold's Cabin and Little Jack's...all in our neighborhood.

WHAT DOES MOTHERLY MEAN TO YOU?

To nurture, to love, to listen, to balance being both soft and strong.

IN ONE WORD HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ALL THE ROLES YOU PLAY?

Mother: patient

Wife: loving

Business Owner: passionate

Designer: practical

Friend: loyal

CAN YOU SHARE A FEW OF YOUR FAVORITE MOMMY MOMENTS?

Bedtime Story: I am Peace and I am Yoga

Lullaby: We spent many hours rocking to Ben Harper's "The Three of Us." It's instrumental and so peaceful.

Vacation spot: New York

Restaurant: The Standard Grill with kids is fun and delicious.

Children’s Brands: I just launched Library Littles, so I am loving that for little girls. I also love Zara Kids & Bonpoint. For boys, selections are harder, but I love a mix of classic and modern, Johnnie-O, Joules, and Appaman.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WISH YOU WOULD HAVE KNOWN BEFORE BECOMING A MOM?

I was really ready to be a mom, but one thing that stands out is that old trite saying "it goes by so fast." I remember people saying that during the wedding planning process and wedding day too. You think you can prepare yourself that these moments are going to come and go, but they do so quickly. I try my hardest to soak in each and every day at each and every stage.

WORDS TO LIVE BY

Smile and Be Kind.
