We are thrilled to have Buru Collaborator, Mariah Grumet Humbert, founder of Old Soul Etiquette, guest write the Behind the Seams introduction to the Celebration Collection! And don't miss her Top 5 Etiquette Tips when dressing for special occasions or events!
As someone who has dedicated her career to helping people create stronger connections with the right people, I have to practice what I preach, right? I’m Mariah Grumet Humbert, a NYC-based etiquette trainer, author, speaker, and founder of Old Soul Etiquette. I am beyond honored and excited to be collaborating with Buru this month to bring you our Celebration Collection.
I’ve admired Buru from afar, stocking my closet with pieces that truly filled a void in my closet. I always felt (and still feel!) like myself in a Buru outfit. "Timeless with a twist?” Sounds like me!
While the clothes made getting dressed a joy, I gravitated toward the energy, mission, and core of the brand even more. All I kept thinking was, “I need to meet Morgan.” I was captured and inspired by everything her and her team have built. Shortly later, I saw an open invitation on social media to celebrate Buru’s NYC boutique opening and knew this was my chance!
In my work, I am constantly telling people that you have to put yourself in the right places to meet the right people. Luck exists, but you need to get out of your comfort zone so that luck can find you. On a warm October day, I headed uptown by myself, walked into the Buru store, and introduced myself to Morgan and Brett. I can say for sure that I did not go meet Morgan with the intention of leaving and discussing potentially working together. The luck found me, and not because I got the opportunity to collaborate with a brand I love, but because I created new and important relationships with people who now mean so much to me. The incredible clothing is the cherry on top!
We are so thrilled to introduce Buru x Old Soul Eitquette’s Celebration Collection. We wanted to provide really special options for you to wear to celebrate all of life’s moments- big and small. Living in New York City has taught me the importance of dressing for the celebration that is in each day. We shot the collection in my home city and home to Buru’s Upper East Side Boutique. I wanted to incorporate iconic venues in NYC that reflected the inspiration for the collection. I had my “Blair Waldorf Moment” in tweed on the steps of The Met, strolled down Fifth Avenue past Jackie O’s apartment in our “Jackie Dress,” felt like Audrey in front of the window at Tiffany’s, and showcased our “Astor Gown” in front of The Astor House. A true dream come true.
Before I go, I will leave you with a few etiquette tips to consider while you are getting dressed for your upcoming special occasions:
1. Always respect the dress code. While I will continue to be a champion of dressing boldly, it’s important to do so within the provided dress code for the event.
2. Consider the time of your event whether you are deciding on a dress code as the host or contemplating what to wear as a guest. Anything that starts prior to 6pm is considered “day dress” and an event that starts after 6pm would be considered “evening dress.”
3. For social events, it is best to arrive on time or within 10-15 minutes of the start time. It is actually considered poor etiquette to arrive early to a social event!
4. You’ll want to avoid putting any personal belongings on the table at an event, so keep that in mind when you are choosing your handbag and other items.
5. When you are struggling to choose the right outfit, use my 5 W’s:
Who: Who will you be meeting or seeing?
What: What does this event entail? Does your outfit need to work for a certain activity?
When: What time is this event taking place?
Where: Does your outfit work well with the venue?
Why: What is your goal for attending this event? Are you making an important first impression?
